Sacraments

In the Presbyterian tradition there are only two sacraments (“sacra” meaning holy, so holy activities). They are Baptism and the Lord’s Supper, also called Communion. In order to help answer questions, we have noted these quick thoughts about each.

bullet

Baptism:

bullet Is a wonderful part of being part of the body of Christ    and the church
bullet Happens at a regularly scheduled service of worship
bullet One parent must be a practicing Christian, normally a  church member
bullet Sponsors are welcome (Godparents)
bullet Baptism can be requested by contacting the pastor
bullet A child need not be an infant to be baptized
bullet Adults can be baptized, and in fact must be if they  wish to join the church
bullet Baptism is by the anointed of the baptized person head with water.

bullet Communion:

bullet Is a remembrance and a participation in the death and resurrection of Jesus
bullet Is celebrated on the first Sundays of the month, except September, when it is on the second Sunday
bullet Is open to all who have been baptized
bullet Usually is bread dipped in a cup of grape juice, called intinction
bullet Occasionally is pew communion, small cups of juice and piece of bread
bullet Happens also on Thanksgiving Eve, Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, and Maundy Thursday
